Shelter Cove sits on Broad Creek, the tidal creek that cuts into the middle of Hilton Head from the west and nearly splits the island in two. That geography is why the marina is here and why it matters: from Broad Creek you can be in Calibogue Sound, Port Royal Sound or the Intracoastal Waterway within minutes, and the creek itself holds resident bottlenose dolphins that work its oyster banks on the falling tide.
Practically, Shelter Cove is the ungated alternative to Harbour Town. There is no community gate, no daily pass and no fee to park. That single difference decides a lot of evenings. It is mid-island, directly off William Hilton Parkway beside Palmetto Dunes, so it is a shorter drive from most of the rental inventory on the island than the south end is.
The harbour is a horseshoe of restaurants, shops and charter offices around a marina that runs to something over a hundred slips. Most of the island's dolphin cruises, sunset cruises, fishing charters and pirate-themed children's trips leave from these docks, along with jet-ski and boat rentals. A large bronze-effect King Neptune stands on the quay with his trident; it is the meeting point everyone actually uses and the thing children run to.
In summer the harbour runs HarbourFest, which has been going for more than three decades. Tuesday nights bring fireworks over Broad Creek — typically from early June through mid-to-late August, weather permitting — and both Tuesday and Thursday evenings carry live music, a trackless train, arts and crafts stalls and children's entertainment, including the long-running Shannon Tanner shows. It gets busy and it is genuinely aimed at families.
Off-season, it is a quiet marina with good west-facing sunsets over the creek and a reliable dinner.
Shelter Cove is mid-island, directly off William Hilton Parkway (US-278) beside Palmetto Dunes, roughly opposite Shelter Cove Towne Centre. Turn onto Shelter Cove Lane and follow it down to the harbour.
Parking is free and there is no community gate to pass — the main practical advantage over Harbour Town. The lots fill on summer Tuesday evenings during HarbourFest; the overflow answer is to park at the Towne Centre across the Parkway and walk. The island's leisure trail runs along the Parkway here, so the harbour is easy to reach by bike from Palmetto Dunes and the mid-island rentals.
HarbourFest runs through the summer season and is the busiest thing that happens on this side of the island. The structure has been consistent for years: fireworks on Tuesday evenings, usually starting in early June and running to mid or late August, plus an additional show around the Fourth of July. Live music, children's entertainers, craft stalls and a trackless train fill the harbour on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.

This is the island's most convenient departure point for most visitors, simply because you do not pay to enter a community to reach it.
Dolphin cruises are the biggest category on Hilton Head and Broad Creek is prime ground for them. Bottlenose dolphins are resident here year-round rather than seasonal, and boats working the creek and out into Calibogue Sound find them reliably. Morning trips are calmer; late-afternoon trips have better light.
Sunset cruises run from spring to autumn and are the best value on the water — roughly ninety minutes, west-facing, with the sun going down over the creek and the marsh.
Fishing charters split between inshore trips for redfish, speckled trout and flounder in the creeks and sounds, and longer offshore runs. Inshore is the sensible choice with children or in anything but flat conditions.
Rentals — jet skis, small boats, kayaks and paddleboards — operate from the docks. Note that the tide range here runs to six or seven feet and Broad Creek empties dramatically at low water; if you are self-navigating, get the tide table and take the advice given at the counter seriously.
The harbour ring holds a mix of waterfront restaurants, casual dockside bars and small shops and galleries. Tables on the water go first at sunset and on HarbourFest nights; midweek off-season you can walk in.
Across William Hilton Parkway is Shelter Cove Towne Centre, the island's main modern shopping centre — supermarket, chain retail, cinema-scale parking — and behind it Shelter Cove Community Park, a town park on Broad Creek with open lawn, a play area and a boardwalk out to the water. The park is a useful free alternative if the harbour is heaving, and it has its own view of the fireworks.
That combination is the case for Shelter Cove over Harbour Town for a family week: you can do a supermarket run, a play in the park, a dolphin cruise and dinner without moving the car or paying a gate fee.

No. Shelter Cove is not inside a gated community, there is no day pass, and parking at the harbour is free. That is the main practical difference from Harbour Town, which sits inside Sea Pines and charges a per-vehicle gate fee. You only pay for what you book — a cruise, a charter, a rental or dinner.
On Tuesday evenings through the summer, typically from early June to mid or late August, with an extra show around the Fourth of July. They start after dark, so well past nine in June. Shows are cancelled for thunderstorms, which are common on summer evenings here. Dates shift each year — check the harbour's own calendar rather than an old listing.
Shelter Cove is the more practical choice for most visitors. It is mid-island, closer to the bulk of the rental accommodation, and it costs nothing to reach. Boats work Broad Creek and out into the sounds, where bottlenose dolphins are resident year-round. Harbour Town boats are good too, but you pay the Sea Pines gate fee to get to the dock.
The harbour's own free lots fill from early evening on summer Tuesdays. The reliable answer is to park at Shelter Cove Towne Centre across William Hilton Parkway and walk over, or to arrive by about seven. Shelter Cove Community Park behind the Towne Centre also has parking, open lawn and its own view of the fireworks if the harbour is too crowded.
