The first thing to understand about water sports on Hilton Head is where they happen. On most beach destinations you walk down the sand and rent a jet ski from a shack. Not here. The island's beaches have no motorised rental concessions on them, so jet skis, parasail boats, tubes and ski boats all run out of the marinas on the back side: Broad Creek in the middle of the island, and Skull Creek on the Intracoastal. You drive to a dock, not to the sand.

That geography is a gift. Broad Creek is protected marsh water with a no-wake zone through its inner reaches and open water further out, which means a jet ski ride here is a run through a tidal creek system with dolphins in it, not a lap of a crowded beach. Parasail boats work Calibogue Sound and the water off the beach, where the view back at the island is a low green wall of pine and live oak rather than a skyline, because building heights are capped by town ordinance. Tubing and waterskiing happen in the sheltered stretches early in the day, before the sea breeze puts a chop on everything.

The menu is fairly standard: jet ski rentals by the hour, guided jet ski tours that run a route through the creeks and sounds, parasailing, tubing, banana boat rides, waterskiing and wakeboarding behind a boat, and some paddleboard and kayak rental from the same counters. What varies is who will take you and at what age, because minimum ages, weights and licence requirements are set partly by South Carolina law and partly by each operator's insurer.

Two rules are worth knowing before you book anything with an engine. South Carolina does not allow personal watercraft to be operated between sunset and sunrise, so there is no such thing as a sunset jet ski ride here. And operators under sixteen need to satisfy the state's boater education requirement, with rental businesses generally able to issue a short-course rental certificate on the spot. Ask about both when you reserve rather than at the dock with a disappointed teenager.

What is on offer, and where it runs

Jet skis launch from the Broad Creek and Skull Creek marinas. Rentals are usually by the hour on a defined area of water; guided tours take a group out on a route through the creeks and into Calibogue Sound or toward Port Royal Sound, typically for an hour to ninety minutes. The guided version is the better buy for first-timers, because someone knows where the sandbars are.

Parasailing runs from the same marinas, with the boat winching you up several hundred feet over the sound. Flights last a few minutes each, though the trip is an hour or more because everyone aboard takes a turn. Two and three-person flights are common.

Tubing and banana boats are towed behind a powerboat, usually in the protected water of Broad Creek, and are the cheapest way to get a group of children thoroughly wet.

Waterskiing and wakeboarding are available by the hour behind a proper ski boat. Early morning is the only sensible time, because the creek turns glassy before the wind comes up.

Surfing is not really a thing here. The beach shelves gently and the waves are small most of the year. Boogie boards are fun, and there is a modest surf scene, but nobody should plan a trip around it.

Bands rather than quotes. Confirm before booking, and expect peak-season pricing in July.

  • Jet ski rental: commonly $100 to $180 per hour per machine, usually with two riders allowed on a ski. Half-hour slots are cheaper where offered.
  • Guided jet ski tour: roughly $120 to $200 per ski for an hour to ninety minutes, guide included.
  • Parasailing: typically $85 to $120 per flyer, with tandem and triple flights priced per person.
  • Tubing or banana boat: often $40 to $70 per person for a shared session.
  • Waterskiing or wakeboarding behind a boat: usually sold by the hour and considerably more, since you are chartering the boat and driver.

Fuel surcharges are common on jet skis and are sometimes quoted separately, so ask what the final number is. A security deposit or a card hold on the machine is normal. Crew tips are customary on guided trips and on parasail boats.

Parking at the marinas is generally free, which is worth noting on an island where beach park parking is not. And on a summer Saturday, the morning sessions are usually gone by the time visitors think to book, so reserve a day or two out.

When to go: wind, tide and time of day

When to go

Morning is not a preference here, it is the answer. The creeks and sounds are near flat at first light, the sea breeze usually fills in through the late morning, and by mid-afternoon in summer there is a short chop on the open water that makes tubing punishing and waterskiing pointless. Anything towed behind a boat should be booked as early as the operator will run it.

Wind is the variable that cancels. Parasail operators have firm limits and will stand down when it blows, often at short notice on an otherwise sunny day. Jet ski tours continue in more wind but become a wet, bouncing ride once it gets past about fifteen knots.

Tide matters less than for kayaking but is not irrelevant. An outgoing tide running against an easterly breeze stacks up a short, steep chop in Calibogue Sound and Port Royal Sound, which is uncomfortable on a ski and unpleasant on a tube.

Season: water temperature runs from the low eighties in July and August to the upper fifties in late winter, so the motorised season effectively runs April to October, with a shoulder where a wetsuit top is welcome. July and August are hot, busy and thunderstorm-prone from mid-afternoon. September and early October are the quiet sweet spot with warm water and thinner crowds.

Remember the state rule: no personal watercraft between sunset and sunrise.

If you have one morning and a mixed-age group, parasailing plus a tube ride from the same marina is the efficient combination. Everyone can parasail, including most grandparents, and the tube deals with the teenagers.

If the group is all adults and confident on machines, a guided jet ski tour beats an hourly rental. The routes cover water you would never find on your own, and the guide handles the tide and the sandbars, which around the creek mouths genuinely matter.

  • Swimwear you can move in, and a rash vest or sun shirt. You will be in full sun on reflective water with no shade for the whole session.
  • Sunscreen applied before you leave the car, because you will not be reapplying mid-tube.
  • Sunglasses on a retainer strap, or leave them in the car. Loose glasses last about four minutes on a jet ski.
  • A towel and dry clothes for the drive back. Every one of these activities ends with you soaked.
  • A waterproof phone case or, better, no phone at all. Operators do not take responsibility for anything that goes over the side.
  • A photo ID and the card used to book, for the deposit hold on motorised rentals.
  • Water shoes for the floating docks, which are wet and can be steep at low tide.
  • Cash for tips.

Skip the loose hats, the dangling jewellery and anything glass. And if you take a GoPro, mount it properly. The bottom of Broad Creek is full of things that were not tethered.

The rules, the limits and the honest caveats

Before you book

South Carolina PWC law is specific. Personal watercraft may not be operated between sunset and sunrise. Operators generally need to be at least sixteen to ride unsupervised, and younger riders are subject to the state's boater education requirement, which rental businesses can usually satisfy with a short on-site course and a temporary certificate. Every machine carries a lanyard cut-off that must be attached to the rider.

Age and weight minimums are the operator's, not ours. Parasail flights have combined weight limits per flight and minimum ages that differ between companies and insurers. Tubing usually has a minimum age too. Treat any number you read online as indicative and confirm with the operator when you book, especially with young children or a mixed-weight pair.

The dolphin rules apply to you on a jet ski. Stay at least 50 yards off, never pursue an animal for a closer look, and never feed one. A jet ski chasing dolphins in Broad Creek is both illegal harassment and a fast way to get an operator's permission withdrawn. Manatees also turn up in these creeks occasionally in summer; if you see one, slow right down.

Weather calls are final, and alcohol and throttles do not mix. Boating under the influence carries real consequences in South Carolina.
