Shore Beach Service staffs up from late March and peaks in summer. The Town's paid-parking window opens the same month, with one notable exception.
Shore Beach Service, the Town's contracted beach patrol, starts putting lifeguards on stands in late March, builds to its largest numbers from May through the end of August, and keeps guards working into late October. At the height of summer there are something like seventy guards on the sand at any one time, with the rest on breaks or off. The patrol itself — the red trucks — covers the island's full stretch of beach year-round, not just the staffed months.
Guarded swim zones concentrate at the Town beach parks: Coligny, Driessen, Folly Field and Islanders, plus staffed stretches in front of the oceanfront resorts. Look for the red umbrellas and the high chairs, and swim in front of them. Hilton Head has a gently shelving beach and a big tidal range, which produces fewer dramatic breakers than people expect and more inshore holes and runouts than they expect. The guards move the swim flags for a reason.
The Town's paid-parking window runs from March 1 to early September, enforced daily from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. At recently published rates it is around $3 an hour Monday to Friday and around $5 an hour on Saturdays and Sundays, per vehicle, at Alder Lane, Driessen, Folly Field, Fish Haul Creek and Islanders.
Coligny Beach Park is the exception. It is exempt from the parking charge, with a free public lot across the road holding several hundred spaces and a seasonal shuttle running to overflow parking when the main lot fills. That is why Coligny is the first lot to fill on a July Saturday and why the parks either side of it are calmer at ten in the morning.
Rates and the enforcement window are set by the Town and have changed more than once in recent years. Check the Town's beach parking page before you budget a week around it.
No glass on the sand, at any time of year. And dogs are off the beach between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. through the core summer months — leashed and welcome outside those hours, and far freer between October and the end of March.
