Turnover Saturday: Why US-278 Backs Up Every Summer Afternoon

Most weekly rentals on Hilton Head change over on Saturday. Guests leave between about 9 and 11 in the morning, the next lot are told they cannot get in before 3 or 4 in the afternoon, and the entire inbound population of the island attempts the bridges in the same three-hour window. SCDOT counts more than 60,000 trips on and off the island every day. On a mid-July Saturday afternoon a large share of them are trying to go the same direction at once.

The timing that works

Cross before 11 a.m. if you can. Between about 9 and 11 the heavy movement is outbound, and you are driving against it. If you cannot be early, be late: stop in Bluffton, eat, do the grocery shop, and cross after 6 p.m. The worst possible plan is to arrive between 2 and 5, which is precisely when most people aim for because it matches their check-in time.

Doing your supermarket run on the mainland before you cross is worth an hour on arrival day regardless of the traffic. Island stores on a Saturday afternoon are their own queue.

Route choice will not save you

There are two ways in. The Cross Island Parkway is a toll road with a small charge at the plaza; William Hilton Parkway, US-278 Business, is free. On a bad Saturday neither is reliably quicker, because the constraint is the bridges themselves and the signals on the mainland approach, not the road on the island side. Pick whichever puts you nearer your rental and stop refreshing the map.

What is coming

Beaufort County and SCDOT have been working for years on replacing the eastbound bridge over Mackay and Skull Creeks and reworking the approaches. As of spring 2026 county officials put the design at roughly 60 percent complete, with construction not expected to begin until around 2028 and running something like two and a half years once it does. Nothing about this summer's Saturday changes before then — and when work does start, the construction years will be worse before they are better.
