The island's practical shopping stop on Broad Creek: a supermarket, real shops, free parking and a waterside park, with no gate to pass.

Shelter Cove Towne Centre is the open-air shopping and dining village on the north side of William Hilton Parkway, mid-island, backing onto Broad Creek. It runs to something like 290,000 square feet with more than thirty-five shops and restaurants, anchored by a Kroger supermarket and a Belk department store, and it is where island residents actually do their errands.
Start with the thing that confuses everyone: this is not Shelter Cove Harbour & Marina. The Harbour is across the Parkway, on the water, with the Neptune statue, the charter boats, the dolphin cruises and the Tuesday-night summer fireworks. The Towne Centre is the retail side: groceries, clothes, a cinema-sized car park, restaurants that do not require a reservation three days out. They share a name, a road and a creek, and they do completely different jobs. If someone tells you to meet them "at Shelter Cove", ask which one.
What the Towne Centre does for a visitor is unglamorous and genuinely useful. If you are in a rental villa for a week, this is the Saturday-afternoon stop: the big grocery shop, the forgotten beach chairs, the pharmacy, the bottle of wine, the rain jacket nobody packed. It is free to enter, free to park, and there is no community gate anywhere near it, which is not true of the island's south-end equivalents.
It is also more pleasant than the description suggests, because of the water. Behind the retail, a waterside park and promenade runs along Broad Creek with a fountain, a playground, shaded picnic areas, benches, walking paths and a performance pavilion. That park is west-facing over the creek, which makes it one of the easier free sunsets on the island, and it has its own distant view of the Tuesday fireworks without the harbour crowd.
The restaurants cover a wider range than the harbour's — a steakhouse, a bistro, pizza, burgers, ice cream, coffee, a craft beer bar and a rooftop spot. Tenants do turn over. Check before you drive over for one specific shop.
The Towne Centre is mid-island on the north side of William Hilton Parkway (US-278), roughly opposite the turn for Shelter Cove Harbour & Marina and beside Palmetto Dunes. It is signposted from the Parkway and impossible to miss once you are close: it is the only large open-air retail centre on that road.
Parking is free and there is a great deal of it, across several surface lots. There is no community gate, no day pass and no meter. Even on a summer Tuesday evening, when the Harbour's own lots fill for the fireworks, this is the overflow that works — park here and walk across.
Walking between the two Shelter Coves takes about ten minutes and involves crossing the Parkway, which is a busy four-lane road. Use the signalised crossing rather than improvising.
By bike, the island's leisure trail network runs along William Hilton Parkway past the entrance, so the Towne Centre is straightforward to reach from Palmetto Dunes, Shipyard and the mid-island rentals. There are racks near the shops.
Shelter Cove Community Park and the creekside promenade are reached through the centre from the rear car parks; you do not need to drive round.

The practical upshot is that they complement each other rather than compete. Park once at the Towne Centre on a Tuesday evening in summer, do the grocery run, walk over to the Harbour for the fireworks, and walk back to a car you did not have to fight for.
The part most visitors never find is at the back. Shelter Cove Community Park and the promenade along it run the length of the retail on the Broad Creek side, and it is a proper town park rather than a landscaped strip.
There is open lawn, a playground, a fountain, shaded picnic spots, benches, paved walking paths and a performance pavilion that hosts the island's outdoor community events. There is a boardwalk and pier reaching out over the head of Broad Creek, which is where you want to be standing.
Two reasons to go deliberately rather than incidentally:
The sunset. This faces west over the creek and the marsh, and Hilton Head's beaches do not. It is free, there is parking twenty yards away, and there are restrooms and food behind you. For a family that wants the sunset without booking a cruise or paying a gate fee, this is close to the best option on the island.
The fireworks. On summer Tuesday evenings the harbour across the Parkway sends up a show. You can see it from here, at a distance, without the crowd, the parking scramble or the wait for a table. It is not the same experience. It is a considerably easier one with a four-year-old.
Take repellent from May to October. Marsh edge at dusk is no-see-um territory.
The honest framing: nobody flies to Hilton Head to shop at the Towne Centre. What it does is remove friction from a week in a rental.
Compared with Coligny Plaza at the south end, the Towne Centre is newer, bigger, more chain-led and far easier to park at. Coligny is more eccentric, more walkable from the beach, and more fun to browse. Most weeks you use both.

Yes, a Kroger anchors the centre, and it is the most convenient large supermarket for anyone staying mid-island, in Palmetto Dunes or in Shipyard. For a week in a rental villa it is the single most useful stop on the island, because eating even half your meals in is what keeps a family holiday here affordable. Parking is free and there is plenty of it.
At the Towne Centre, and walk across. The Harbour's own free lots fill from early evening on summer Tuesdays, while the Towne Centre's lots are far larger and rarely full. The walk takes about ten minutes and crosses William Hilton Parkway at the signals. If you would rather not join the crowd at all, the park behind the Towne Centre has its own distant view of the show.
Yes, and it is one of the easiest free sunsets on the island. The waterside park and promenade behind the shops face west over Broad Creek and the marsh, with a boardwalk and pier out over the water, free parking a short walk away, restrooms and food behind you. Hilton Head's beaches face east, so the ocean side gets sunrise and the creek side gets sunset.
They do different things. The Towne Centre is newer, larger, more chain-led and much easier to park at, with a supermarket and a department store, so it wins on errands. Coligny Plaza at the south end is smaller, quirkier and full of independent shops, and you can walk to it barefoot from Coligny Beach Park. On a week-long stay most people end up using both.
